John Neuhaus, MD, is Medical Director and Co-Founder of Paradise Recovery. Dr. Neuhaus received his medical degree from the University of Kansas. He moved to Hawaii in 1992 to pursue residency training in Psychiatry with a further specialization in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, where he worked with the homeless population in Hawaii, treating the severely addicted and mentally ill. He completed his formal training in 1997. His areas of interest include cross-cultural psychiatry, family dyad and couple interpersonal psychotherapy, the impact of addiction on the family, and the interface of the “Western lifestyle” with Eastern philosophies of living. He has special training and experience in the area of sexual addiction and its treatment, along with a host of substance addictions.
Dr. Neuhaus says he helped to co-found Paradise Recovery because “I saw the need to treat individuals with addiction in a very unique and special way. People will respond best to addiction treatment when they are able to let go of past beliefs about themselves and move forward with new thinking and new practices. Often, the best way to do this is to address the core issues and thinking cycles that led the person down the path of addiction and helped to maintain the addiction.” Of course, Dr. Neuhaus says “this takes time…. and a lot of effort on the part of the individual receiving treatment: This is part of the process of ‘surrender’. However, the time and effort are well worth it in the long run”. |
