Addiction treatment needs to be holistic, or all-encompassing of the areas that are generally most affected by the disease of addiction.  This is what the latest studies are saying for achieving the best recovery rates.  The “mind-body-spirit” theme that you often see is a simplistic definition of what most view as holistic treatment. A truly holistic program, such as what Paradise Recovery offers, is one that treats addiction from a number of different angles but in an integrated way.  Integrated means that all of the “moving parts” of the treatment are working harmoniously together in a seamless way.

Addiction treatment is not just about doing the 12 steps.  It is not just about doing group work.  Contrary to some program’s claims, addiction treatment is certainly not all about individual work either. Studies have clearly shown that these methods are not effective in isolation.  However, addiction treatment is about providing a combination of approaches that involves individual work, core issue & underlying issue work, cognitive, process and educational groups, 12 steps, detoxification, dietary changes, an exercise program, acupuncture and meditative practices.  In order to accomplish such a robust program, there must be highly credentialed staff who can provide more to you than just “counseling”.

One area that often gets overlooked in drug rehab is that of individual core issues.  We are who we are, in part, because of the life experiences that we have had in the past.  However, not all of these life experiences have been positive.  Certainly, past life experiences may be contributing factors for relapse with drugs or alcohol, they may contribute to faulty thinking or beliefs that we have which may contribute to relapse, and they may simply be triggers for relapse.  Sometimes drugs or alcohol are used to mask or to try to “forget” bad experiences from the past.  Without working through some of these issues, or at least learning how to better cope with these underlying issues which may be sabotaging your sobriety, your success after drug rehab is going to be limited.  That is why, when you are ready, core issue work is critical to your long-term success.
