Private Rehab: What should you expect and not expect

Choosing a private rehab for your alcohol and drug addiction recovery needs is a smart choice. However, there are considerations you should be aware of prior to and upon admission to the program.

1) Be aware of spa programs: Being in early recovery, there is so much to learn and so much to purge in order to move forward with a recovery that is sustaining. To integrate massage, acupuncture, movement therapy, aroma therapy, etc. into your treatment is recommended for a holistic program attending to a mind, body, spirit approach. The program should offer several individual psychotherapy per week, family/loved ones sessions, traditional and complimentary medical staff, and relapse prevention training. 2) Be aware of a penitential model: Some programs have a heavy emphasis on being punitive and punishing their clients. Often these programs have "gurus" who have answers for all your recovery needs. The staff at the private rehab should respect you and attempt to approach your issues with a solution-focus, resiliency approach.

"Physician, don't heal thyself" The impaired physician in treatment

In recent surveys, physicians are being asked about their colleagues and how they would respond if a physician they knew was addicted to alcohol or drugs and their judgment was impaired. Surprisingly, only 65% of the physicians responded said they would report a colleague to the state medical board or hospital administration.

No one wants to imagine that their physician's judgment may be impaired by drugs or alcohol. However, the disease of addiction cuts across all professions, ages, socio-economic classes, races, sexual identities and religious affiliations. Doctors have an advantage and a disadvantage, most people assume that their doctor is healthy and is not addicted to substances or processes. The socialization of physicians as "the elite" and their training experiences, do not lend itself to immediate acknowledgement of their disease and seeking help.

There are committees in each state medical boards that work with Doctors needing treatment and monitoring secondary to an addiction problem. A physician often is required by the board to seek treatment and begin a process of accountability. Their recovery is important not only for themselves, but for all the patients whose lives depend on their sound analytical skills and judgment. Of course, when you are in the throws of your addiction, most cognitive abilities are not performing well.

The physician needs to seek out a residential program that is both respectful to her or him and also provides the difficult challenge to get through the active phase of using and begin to practice recovery in a holistic and integrative manner. A physician should not be treated any differently than another addict, but their resistances and barriers may be different and may require certain therapeutic interventions to assist them in their early phase of recovery.

Drug Rehab: Healing the Broken Self

Alcohol Rehab: Should I choose a Large Program or a Smaller One?

There are a number of alcohol rehabs and drug rehabs out there. Some are excellent. Some are not so great. Some are large. Some are small.

Larger alcohol rehab programs will often have a large compliment of staff with extended facilities. Larger rehabs are often associated with a less individualized approach. They tend to focus more on the group model of treatment and a cookie-cutter approach. This method works for some people. Larger rehabs often have the look and feel of a hospital facility. You eat in a cafeteria. You walk around the "grounds" of the facility. You are one of a large multiple of other clients.

Smaller alcohol rehabs and drug rehabs are generally better able to provide a more intimate and private environment in which individual treatment needs can be recognized and addressed. There is generally less reliance on a sole group therapy type of approach and more of an emphasis on an individual therapy approach. Instead of being in a hospital-like environment, smaller rehabs tend to look more like a home/family environment. The staffing is smaller and more intimate. There is no chance of feeling "lost in the crowd". You eat family-style, usually at a dining room table. You are one of a small number of other clients.

When choosing a drug or alcohol rehab, think about the size of the program. Knowing yourself better than anyone else, ask yourself which environment and treatment approach is going to have the biggest impact on you and give you the best chance at a lasting recovery.

Exclusive Drug Rehab and Personal Accountability

Sometimes people get the wrong idea about private or exclusive drug rehabs. They might think it is a spa or mini-vacation. Some people may think that personal accountability goes out the window as soon as they enter a private rehab. There may even be some drug rehabs that are very much like this.

In the best private rehabs, nothing could be further from the truth. The best private drug rehabs are those that take care of you but also expect personal accountability. You need to have personal accountability for yourself, your thoughts, and your actions in order to be successful in recovery. That accountability starts the moment you walk through the door in the best private rehabs. I didn't say that the surroundings are not nice. Or that the food is not great. I am saying that it is not easy. Recovery is a challenge. And personal accountability can be a challenge. You will have to work hard in rehab in order to be a participant in saving your own life. You will be personally accountable for your actions. Personal accountability can be as simple as needing to follow the house rules and as complicated as committing to attending meetings/therapy no matter what else is going on in your life. (Remember, "recovery above all else" is your new mantra).

Sometimes personal accountability feels like a real downer. It means accepting consequences for your actions. But it can also be a beautiful thing. Especially when it becomes the one thing that sustains a lasting recovery.

Executive Rehab: Where the Individual Counts

Many of the less private rehabs offer treatment that is almost solely group based. What this means is there is no consideration given to the individual. What about your individual core issues that are feeding your addiction? What about your family and their support or lack of support? What about your dual diagnosis, depression, anxiety, trauma history, etc, etc.

You see, private addiction treatment should not be undertaken in a cookie-cutter fashion. Sadly, though, most drug rehabs and alcohol rehabs do exactly that.... cookie cutter. The current research does not support ignoring all of the things about you and your addiction that make you unique. Therefore, your treatment needs to be unique. Of course, some aspects of addiction treatment are the same for everyone. Addiction is a disease that is not unique and many addicts carry on with their addiction in a very non-unique way. However, for everything that is non-unique about addiction, there is an equal number of things that are unique about you and your addiction! Therefore, addiction treatment must strike a balance between treating the unique individual and treating the non-unique disease.

To treat one without the other just does not make sense. That is just a part of any great holistic drug or alcohol treatment program.

Drug Rehab Fights

We are not talking about shouting matches or fist fights here... When you enter drug rehab, you are making a commitment to put up a fight. A fight against the disease of addiction. It is going to be a life or death battle. Addiction can be overwhelming. Therefore, the fight against addiction needs to be even more overwhelming.

What kind of fighting will you be doing when you enter a treatment program? That depends on the individual. Sometimes it is a fight to focus on one's own self. Let's face it; it's not usually a fun process to focus on yourself. It is much easier to look at others and their faults. Then there's the fight of "do I really need to be here?" There's the fight of craving. The fight of feeling like you don't deserve to get better. I mean, you've done so much damage already, right? There's the denial.... oh, the denial.... You see, addiction is a very, very clever disease. It plays all sorts of mind games. The mind games all revolve around trying anything and everything possible to get you to not focus on yourself, get you out of treatment, blame others, pity yourself, make excuses, etc, etc, etc!! This is the fight that is going to take place as soon as you enter treatment.

Remember, this fight is normal. Everyone goes through this battle. Just persevere through it. Don't fall for the clever ways that addiction will try to de-rail your recovery (there will be many). Just remember, recovery above all else!

What makes private rehabs work?

The term "rehab" has become quite sexy in the past year. From the Spears to the Lohans, from most members of the Baldwin Family to dozens of trust fund babies across the country. We even have award-winning Amy Winehouse singing about rehabs! Rehab has become "cool".
Imagine not even ten years ago when the social stigma attached to rehabs, otherwise known as primary treatment were "low life" or "down and out" or "weak". Today, people from all segments of society are checking-in to rehabs with less of a stigma. Their families are hiring interventionists, in some cases forking out big bucks, and taking more of a total family approach to the disease of addiction, instead of merely blaming the alcoholic/addict of their flaws and infirmities.
Studies are showing that the 'ole 28-Day model is becoming a preferred treatment of the past. Today, we are seeing people staying in rehabs from 30 to 60 to 90+ days. They are extending their experience of "stopping to smell recovery" much longer than there alcoholic and addict predecessors. Why is that? Is it because there is a new way to treat alcoholics and drug addicts? Are alcoholics and addicts more patient than addicts in the past?
The private rehab experience ensures that the client will receive individualized care and begin to touch on the core issues that may be maintaining their drinking or using. I don't believe there's been independent studies that look at the outcomes of private rehabs vs. state operated rehabs, but I wouldn't be surprised that the outcomes would be similar.
The purpose of rehabs, in general, is to introduce the client to many tools, ways, or therapies that they may continue after their relatively brief stay in primary treatment. The rehab experience is sort of a retreat, a calming of the chaos, insanity that has affected their loved ones and families.
