What does a holistic drug rehab really mean? It should mean a drug rehab that takes a multi-faceted, integrated approach to the treatment of addiction. You know the saying "man does not live by bread alone"? Well, addiction is not overcome by just one method alone. The latest studies show that a more broad and varied approach is needed to treat addiction. Why is this? Because addiction is multi-factorial. That means it has many different causes. Addiction also has many different factors that keep it going. That's what is called the "fuel" behind the addiction. Addiction is expert at keeping you off-balance and off-track. A disease that has many different causes and which fuels itself in many different ways, requires a combination of multiple types of treatments. Thus, for most people group therapy or the 12-steps alone is not the answer. Individual therapy is not the answer. Neither is family therapy, medication, yoga, acupuncture, education, nutrition, or exercise. Actually, the answer lies in a unique combination of many of the above elements. Just one without another can't treat a disease that has so many different faces. The elements that you will need in your treatment may not be quite the same as the elements another person might need. The unique combination and differing intensities of these treatments that is tailored to what you need is what produces a truly individualized addiction treatment approach. That's why it is important to select a holistic drug or alcohol treatment program for yourself or a loved one. And not just one that says they are holistic. Select one that has a truly integrated approach, one with many facets that work in a harmonious way to help you overcome the disease of addiction. The internet is abundant with self-help articles, recommendations, treatment groups, therapies, etc. for alcoholics and drug addicts. The truth is, alcoholism and drug addiction are diseases of isolation. Human nature being what it is, we usually try to find the "easiest" solution to our problems. It would be great if we could just stop drinking on our own or if we could just read a book that would make us stop. Maybe there is a pill or something we could take that would make us stop. Well, unfortunately, it is not that easy. However, there is help for alcoholics and drug addicts out there. Isolation is not the answer. Addiction treatment does work. If you are thinking about inpatient treatment (and you should be.... this is a deadly disease!), the best alcohol rehabs and drug rehabs are those that take a holistic approach to the treatment of the disease. That is to say, they take a treatment approach that hits the disease from multiple angles, but in a carefully coordinated and integrated way. If you are looking for alcohol or drug treatment, just know that treatment works. It takes time and effort on your part. But it is well worth every single thing that you put into it. I see a number of drug rehabs claiming that they have the highest success rates in the country. Some say "76% success rate", some "83%", and I think I saw one that said 90%+. The question that I have is, how did each of those facilities define "success"? That is a really important question. The industry standard is sobriety at the 6 month mark. Is that the number they are using? Also, why aren't their studies published anywhere? If they really have done these studies that show great success rates, why not publish them? Could I take a look at your study? I can answer most of these questions. The drug rehabs that celebrate their success rates don't want to show you their study. They don't want to publish it. Why? Because the study is not good. It won't qualify as a scientific study, either because they are using lousy definitions of "success", they used a very small number of hand-picked people to include in the study, or the results are not real. It is possible that they really don't have a study. If you have a study, why not let me see it? Here is the truth about drug rehabs: the best drug rehabs take an integrative, holistic approach to treatment that is individualized based on your core issues and particular needs. That is being borne out in the real scientific studies that are being published in the scientific literature. Those truly are the drug rehabs with the highest success rates. Being an integrative, holistic treatment program is easier said than done. Most drug and alcohol rehabs don't understand the real meaning of those words. It is very difficult to set up a drug rehab to operate this way, but it is simple and life-changing to receive the benefits of it! There are some good drug rehabs out there. However, not all of them are what they say they are. Don't settle for less. The treatment for crystal meth (crystal methamphetamine, "ice", "batu", or "Tina") addiction is not a lot different than other forms of addiction. There are, however, some promising medications that look like they may have some benefit in terms of reducing craving and risk of relapse. Crystal meth addiction is highly treatable. Hawaii, unfortunately, was the gateway to the rest of the US for crystal meth. This is true because crystal meth had been an asian drug before it came to the US. When I came to Hawaii in the early 90's, I was seeing patients who had been addicted to crystal meth for 10 years or more! Most of the patients that we saw were men who were experiencing fairly severe paranoia and psychosis. We were also involved in some of the first studies with brain PET scanning in long-standing crystal meth addicts. Crystal meth has unfortunately evolved to become a problem across the US and through all age and socio-economic classes, including young women who use crystal meth as a weight loss drug. The crystal meth addicted brain looks like Swiss cheese on the PET scans. No joke. Crystal meth is a horrible substance. It is made from a conglomeration of horrible household and over the counter products that cause serious brain damage. It is highly addictive and it is cheap. Not a good combination! However, with abstinence and treatment, the brain has the possibility of recovering its function. I strongly recommend a good, holistic drug rehab for those suffering from crystal meth addiction. One that has experience in the treatment of crystal meth addiction. With the right addiction treatment, you or a loved one can get much better. You can have your life back again. The best drug rehab and alcohol rehab centers are those that take a holistic approach to drug and alcohol treatment. Most say that healing takes place from "the inside out". Basically, this means that you are making internal changes in your thinking and behavior that leads down a path of sobriety. I want to point out that a truly holistic drug or alcohol treatment program also promotes healing from the outside in. Like we have talked about before, addiction recovery involves a multi-faceted but integrated treatment approach. The treatment approach does not focus solely on what's inside. Sometimes, things need to change on the outside before the inside can begin to change. For example, there are certain nutritional needs that you are going to have in early recovery. The provision of food and the food being seen as medicine is an outside change that will begin to affect the inside of your body and allow it to heal. Acupuncture is an external process that literally goes from outside in, and works to promote internal healing as well. Physical exercise and your physical environment certainly play a role in the healing process. So, when drug rehabs promote healing from the inside out, they are missing a big part of the best treatment that can be used for addiction recovery. For many practicing drug addicts, the last thing on their mind is going to drug rehab. The disease tells the drug addict, "You don't need help! You're not the problem, they are!" They, meaning the significant other, co-worker, employer, children, parents, society, the list goes on and on. After all who wants to go to drug rehab to admit that they are, through drugging, the main source of the problem? Checking into a drug rehab is a BIG step, oftentimes, the hardest step to make. Humility and surrender are key components to recovery, one's that the disease of drug addiction is very resistant to.Once that BIG step is taken, however, the transformation will begin. Recovery is an inside job and being admitted to a drug rehab will assist in healing from within. At Paradise Recovery, we help the drug addict in the transformation process to a healthier, spirited soul. Not only do we offer top-notch therapy, we also introduce you to an array of healing techniques, which include Yoga, Acupuncture, Qi Gong (Movement Therapy), Fitness Training, Meditation. When you are seeking treatment for addiction there are several types of alcohol and drug treatment programs. One type is public or state-funded rehab. They help many people with stabilization, 12-Step programs and group support. The second type is a private program that focuses primarily on getting you clean and sober with many group interventions. Both of these programs spend a great deal of energy imposing their beliefs and principles. Many people feel they've "failed" these programs, since it is difficult for an addict to ascend to such principles without doing the critical work of why they are being self-destructive in the first place. The holistic rehab listens to you. You are the person who drives the treatment, instead of other programs that expect "program compliance". The holistic program is concerned about how the addiction affects all aspects of your life: emotional, physical and spiritual. The holistic program involves non-traditional therapies such as: massage, meditation, acupuncture, physical fitness, etc. The program is designed for YOU! You might ask yourself why a high-profile person such as Richard Quest of CNN would have been caught in Central Park engaged in questionable activities and in possession of crystal methamphetamine. I have the answer for you. It is called the disease of addiction. Addiction is something that you don't have control over. You need help to overcome addiction. If you don't get help, addiction will overcome you. It is that simple. Somewhere Richard Quest may have realized that he was nearing the end of his rope but could not bring himself to get help (addiction is a cruel disease that is unbelievably cunning when it comes to putting barriers up against the addict getting help. Addiction always wants to preserve itself). Maybe this was his cry for help. After all, he was "caught" in Central Park in the middle of New York City. I don't know about you, but if you are a high-profile person trying to not get caught doing something illegal and embarrassing, Central Park is not the place to do it. Yet, that is exactly the place that Richard Quest was arrested. The judge in the case ordered him into treatment. Mr. Quest's cry for help was heard. Addiction can not use its cunning ways to stop him from getting treatment anymore. Now, he has no choice. When you think about it, it was his choice to have no choice. It may have been the only way that he felt he could be in a position to get the help he needs. Let's hope he has entered into a drug rehab that has a holistic treatment program, one that will tackle the addiction from all angles and give him a great shot at success. We wish you the best on your road to recovery. Labels: addiction, addiction treatment, drug rehab, holistic drug treatment

Yes, my cat is an addict. To be specific, he is a sex addict. When there is a female cat around in heat, he becomes a different cat. It's not my cat. Must belong to someone else I think.... he is no longer the friendly, playful and loving being that he was. Now, he is completely focused on getting outside to mate with that female cat that is howling incessantly. He won't eat. He barely sleeps. He no longer grooms himself. He doesn't care about me anymore, the one who has loved him more than anyone. As the loving father that I am, I had mercy on my cat. I had the family jewels removed in an unceremonious procedure. Now, he is happy again. He is loving, playful, and attentive. He eats and takes care of himself. I have my cat back. Was my cat really a sex addict? Sounds kind of funny, but think of the human parallel. What happens with humans as their addiction spirals out of control? I would argue that the same thing happens with the human being as what happened with my cat. My cat didn't necessarily have a disease per se, but he did have a biological drive to reproduce that was rather overwhelming for him. He couldn't overcome it on his own. No one could reason with him or talk him out of his state of mind. Nothing could stop him, even though he was literally wasting away. Well, almost nothing... the orchidectomy did the trick this time. Please don't run out to have an orchidectomy in order to overcome your addiction. It wouldn't work, of course, but ironically having a surgery would be much easier than what the addict has to do in order to maintain on a path of recovery. Fighting addiction is a battle. There is no easy answer. There is no easy solution. However, there are answers. And, there are solutions. Addiction treatment works. To have the best chance of success, look to the best drug rehabs and alcohol rehabs for help. The best rehabs will have a holistic treatment approach and they will work side-by-side with you to overcome your addiction. Whatever you do, just get help. You can't do it on your own. There is no reasoning with addiction. There is no talking yourself out of it. Addiction is very powerful. There are other ways, however, which are clinically proven to be highly effective. Simply, the best drug rehabs are those that are able to provide a holistic approach to your treatment. They will tackle addiction from every angle. They don't overly focus on just one aspect of the addiction. Imagine if you took your car to the mechanic's garage because the engine was running too hot. The mechanics feel that the radiator is the problem because that's what they usually do if the car is running hot. They replace the radiator, the fluids, the hoses. A lot of time and money is poured into fixing the radiator. You take the car home and it is still running hot. There is no improvement. You take it back, and they determine that it must be a faulty radiator or hose, so they replace everything again. But still to no avail. The engine still runs hot. You later find out that the mechanics only know how to change radiators. They don't know any other fixes. They never checked the thermostat or the oil level, which were the actual problems behind the engine overheating. Many drug rehabs have one approach to treating addiction. They hammer away at that one approach. This is usually a group approach, often solely of a 12-step model. Often it is just not enough. Not enough of what you actually needed. It's not that the approach isn't good. Just like the mechanics who put in a perfectly good brand new radiator. It's just that your car didn't really need a new radiator. Of course, a new radiator is always good, but it didn't work for your car's particular problem that it was having. The best drug rehabs tackle addiction from every facet. This is what is known as a holistic treatment approach: Group therapy. Individual therapy. Psychiatric intervention. Eastern medicine. Western medicine. 12-steps. Non 12-steps. Core issue work. Inner child work. Addiction is a deadly disease. It is best to have a strong team in your corner who knows how to fight the disease on all fronts. Many of the less private rehabs offer treatment that is almost solely group based. What this means is there is no consideration given to the individual. What about your individual core issues that are feeding your addiction? What about your family and their support or lack of support? What about your dual diagnosis, depression, anxiety, trauma history, etc, etc. You see, private addiction treatment should not be undertaken in a cookie-cutter fashion. Sadly, though, most drug rehabs and alcohol rehabs do exactly that.... cookie cutter. The current research does not support ignoring all of the things about you and your addiction that make you unique. Therefore, your treatment needs to be unique. Of course, some aspects of addiction treatment are the same for everyone. Addiction is a disease that is not unique and many addicts carry on with their addiction in a very non-unique way. However, for everything that is non-unique about addiction, there is an equal number of things that are unique about you and your addiction! Therefore, addiction treatment must strike a balance between treating the unique individual and treating the non-unique disease. To treat one without the other just does not make sense. That is just a part of any great holistic drug or alcohol treatment program. Alcoholism or heavy alcohol consumption causes a constellation of physical problems for the alcoholic. I am going to address some of these problems in a general way right now. Later, I will address some of the more specific body systems that are altered and damaged due to the alcohol. Alcoholics that are admitted to alcohol rehab are often surprised to hear of the high percentage of daily calories they are getting from their alcohol use. Sometimes, a person is consuming 70-80% of their calories through alcohol consumption! Obviously, alcohol is not like consuming V-8. It is not a very nutritious drink! It is generally what nutritionists call "empty calories", devoid of protein, vitamins, and minerals. So one way that the alcoholic becomes nutritionally deficient is by consuming less calories through nutritious food and more empty calories through alcohol. That's the easy part to understand. As you look deeper, you see that alcohol damages the lining of the small intestine and stomach. These damaged cells can not absorb nutrients as well. Next, alcohol inhibits the breakdown of nutrients by decreasing the secretion of important digestive enzymes from the pancreas. So, even when the alcoholic is eating good food, they are less able to absorb the nutrients from it. One of the nutritional deficiencies that occurs is with a B-complex vitamin called Folic Acid (Folate). As folate levels decrease, it alters further the cells of the small intestine such that even less folate can be absorbed along with other nutrients. As you can see, one facet of alcohol addiction treatment and alcohol detox involves a nutritional re-feeding and vitamin supplementation. Any good holistic addiction treatment program will address nutritional deficiencies seen in alcoholism with a good dietary evaluation and treatment plan. There will be much more detailed information to follow in future posts! John Neuhaus, M.D. Labels: alcohol detox, alcoholic, holistic drug treatment, nutrition and alcoholism

One of the most common forms of addiction in the United States and Canada is that of prescription drug addiction. This type of addiction can be particularly difficult to treat because the addict will often insist that they are justified in taking their large doses of prescription medications. After all, they were prescribed by their doctor. Or several of their doctors. Denial is king here. Doctor shopping is a common occurrence with prescription drug addicts. If one doctor does not give them what they want, they go to the next doctor. Usually, if the doctor tries to set limits with the amount or frequency of a medication, or stop it altogether, the patient will become irate. If the doctor gives in, great! If not, it's off to the next doctor's office. Even though they had to "shop for it", somehow getting the prescription is like a justification for taking the medication. "My doctor told me I need this. It's not that high of a dose". "Obviously I need it or the doctor wouldn't have prescribed it to me". Yet, when you look at the person's life, you see it falling apart at the seams. They are a shadow of the person they once were. Relationships are failing. Their job is faltering. Their marriage is full of strife. They no longer seem like the happy and productive person they once were. As you can see, one of the first steps in treating prescription drug addiction is to get through the denial aspect. Next, you must begin to detox the person off of the prescription drugs. Drug detox for each individual drug has to be considered. With prescription drug addiction, usually there is more than one drug involved. Experienced professionals are needed to tackle the difficult issues that occur in the early stages of prescription drug addiction. The best drug rehabs are able to offer a holistic, individualized approach to both the drug detox and the subsequent addiction treatment. Denial might be king with prescription drug addiction. But denial, in this case, will eventually kill you. Labels: addiction treatment, best drug rehabs, denial in addiction, drug detox, holistic drug treatment, prescription drug addiction

Remember reading about the Revolutionary War in your history books as a student? The British were terribly frustrated with American tactics because the Americans were not playing by the established rules of engagement. The established rules of engagement of the time were that the two armies would meet face-to-face, then on command they would begin shooting at each other. They would die in a nice, orderly fashion. Washington recognized early on that this was not going to work for the outnumbered, under-equipped American forces. Ambush attacks, splinter attacks, attacks from behind and attacks from the side were ordered. We all know the outcome of the Revolutionary War. Addiction treatment is its own battle. The drug rehab or alcohol rehab that you choose should attack addiction head-on. But attacks from every angle are important. We attack addiction through psychological means, psychiatric means, social means, physiologic means, neuro-chemical means, spiritual means, (and even neural means through a process of neurofeedback). It is attacked in group therapy, individual therapy and in the milieu. Addictive thinking is challenged. Underlying core issues are addressed. You see, addiction treatment is multi-faceted! That is a true holistic approach to addiction recovery. With your life at stake, it is important to attack the disease of addiction from all sides. That is what a top drug rehab or top alcohol rehab should do. Labels: addiction recovery, addiction treatment, best alcohol rehab, best drug rehab, drug rehab, holistic drug treatment

Private drug or alcohol treatment centers vary vastly in what they offer, treatment philosophy, and treatment milieu. Many centers simply are not private. They are private pay, but there is nothing private about being in a large facility with 100 other people! Those that truly are private, such as Paradise Recovery and some of the treatment programs in Malibu can vary in treatment philosophy. Sometimes you can tell a little bit about the treatment philosophy by looking at the staffing page. Look at the staff's credentials. Does the program believe in holistic treatment? Part of doing a holistic program means looking at individual core issues that have served to either trigger the addiction or continue to foster it. These issues, given enough time, need to be treated! Make sure that the staffing of the program is equipped from an educational perspective to navigate those delicate waters. Not all addiction treatment centers are the same. Choose the one that offers you what you really want. If you want privacy, a holistic approach with high level staffing, individualized care, and a beautiful, healing location, there are very few choices out there! Better said, what should it mean? A holistic rehab experience, whether it is for drugs, alcohol, sexual addiction, or gambling addiction means that the treatment approach looks at the mind, body and spirit. Mind, body, and spirit is a sometimes overused phrase that actually does not fully encompass the meaning of holistic treatment. "Mind" actually has two components that need to be addressed. One is the psychological aspect of the addiction. The individual core issues. Also, the behavior of addiction. Yes, addiction is a behavior, as well as a disease, as well as a way of thinking. "Mind" also should address psychiatric issues such as depression and anxiety that often accompany addiction. Left untreated, the risk of relapse is much higher. Plus, who wants to go around with a depressive disorder or anxiety disorder? Both conditions, and many others, are highly treatable. "Body" issues refer to the healing and return to health of the body. Taking care of yourself again! Even before that, though, is learning to take care of yourself. Many people don't know how to properly care for themselves. Now you will learn! Healthy diet, exercise, regular sleep, structure, treating ignored health conditions, etc. "Spirit" is a deeper sense of nurturance that occurs through many different avenues. "Spirit" can be found in the ocean, the wind, the land. Spirit may be found through re-connecting with a religious affiliation or re-connecting with whomever is your higher power. Meditation, yoga, and movement therapy can all help you re-connect with the spirit again. Mind-body-spirit are not totally separate entities, as you might guess. They are all three connected and intertwined with one another. Balance is key. Balance is one of the keys to a successful holistic addiction rehab experience.
