Private Addiction Treatment

Private addiction treatment is important to many people. One of the reasons is the quality of care. Imagine the difference in care when you go to a rehab that has 100+ beds versus going to a private drug rehab or alcohol rehab that has 8 beds. Often, in larger facilities the greatest emphasis is on group work. Group work is important. But what about the individual issues that you have? Or what about things that are too sensitive for you to share in a group setting? This is one of the reasons why it is important to have a combination of both individual and group work for your addiction treatment.

Another reason is that studies are showing improved results for people who get treated for both their addiction and other issues that may be contributing to their addiction (such as depression, anxiety, trauma, etc). That is called dual diagnosis. How are you going to address your anxiety in a group setting? Very difficult without individual work!

Take care when selecting a drug rehab or alcohol rehab. It is well-worth looking into a more private setting for yourself where your therapy is going to be more individualized.

Holistic Drug Rehab

What does a holistic drug rehab really mean? It should mean a drug rehab that takes a multi-faceted, integrated approach to the treatment of addiction.

You know the saying "man does not live by bread alone"? Well, addiction is not overcome by just one method alone. The latest studies show that a more broad and varied approach is needed to treat addiction. Why is this? Because addiction is multi-factorial. That means it has many different causes. Addiction also has many different factors that keep it going. That's what is called the "fuel" behind the addiction. Addiction is expert at keeping you off-balance and off-track. A disease that has many different causes and which fuels itself in many different ways, requires a combination of multiple types of treatments.

Thus, for most people group therapy or the 12-steps alone is not the answer. Individual therapy is not the answer. Neither is family therapy, medication, yoga, acupuncture, education, nutrition, or exercise. Actually, the answer lies in a unique combination of many of the above elements. Just one without another can't treat a disease that has so many different faces. The elements that you will need in your treatment may not be quite the same as the elements another person might need. The unique combination and differing intensities of these treatments that is tailored to what you need is what produces a truly individualized addiction treatment approach.

That's why it is important to select a holistic drug or alcohol treatment program for yourself or a loved one. And not just one that says they are holistic. Select one that has a truly integrated approach, one with many facets that work in a harmonious way to help you overcome the disease of addiction.

Rules in Drug Rehab

The best drug rehabs and best alcohol rehabs have a structure within which the staff and clients go about their business of achieving recovery. Why are rules so important? Because rules are a major component of the structure. OK, so why is structure important?

Structure = Recovery. Got it? Structure is the essential foundation for building a lasting recovery. The rules, adherence to the rules, and enforcement of the rules promotes addiction recovery. Addiction loves chaos and confusion. Addiction hates structure and rules. The lack of rules and structure promotes chaos. Addiction loves that!! If you want to get well in rehab, there has to be a structure rooted in personal and house rules.

Rules and structure may seem a bit painful or bothersome at first glance. However, they are the foundation to your beginning journey on the road to addiction recovery. Call Paradise Recovery at 866-478-9898 to learn more about what it takes to get on the recovery path.

Oops! I had a Little (Big) SLIP!

Unfortunately, slips happen, right?

Often, however, slips don't just passively "happen". Most often slips "happen" because of something that we have actively done or not done. The best addiction treatment centers will tell you that sobriety has to become a lifestyle. It has to be the main priority in your life. If it isn't, you are on your way to a "SLIP".

S = Sobriety
L = Loses
I = Its
P = Priority

Once Sobriety Loses Its Priority, your "slip" is right around the corner. Drug rehab, alcohol rehab and addiction treatment trains you how to make sobriety a priority in your life. It teaches you how to transform your life and your thinking. If sobriety becomes interwoven in the very fabric of your being, it will always be a priority for you. Then, you won't have to go through those little (big) SLIPS.

Attorneys and Addiction

Rates of addiction are particularly high with certain associated jobs. Attorneys, unfortunately, suffer from rates of addiction that are much higher than the national average. Addiction afflicts about 10% of all Americans, but the rate approaches 20% with attorneys.

I don't have that answer as to why there is a higher prevelance of addiction with attorneys. I could guess that people who go into law, medicine, and other "exacting" fields are generally Type A personalities. They have to be Type A in order to be great at their line of work. After all, would you want an attorney who did not pay attention to detail working on your case, or a careless surgeon operating on you? Of course not!

However, the character type that makes for successful attorneys, doctors, pilots, etc., probably comes at a price. Of course, attorneys tend to be difficult to treat. Why? For many of the same reasons that they are successful attorneys. You have to be willing to let go to some extent and trust in the expertise of others in order to begin to get well from addiction. This is quite challenging for many. Paradise Recovery is a drug rehab and alcohol rehab that has a lot of success treating attorneys. It takes a special group of people to understand and treat the unique needs that attorneys present. They have a HelpLine that can give you more information: 866-241-7463.

Drug Rehab Fees

If you are looking for a drug rehab or alcohol rehab, be sure to ask what is included in the fees. I know of people who were admitted to drug rehab programs in California, paid very substantial fees, and then were shocked to get a huge doctor bill after they discharged!

Many programs do not want you to know up front that a lot of their costs are not included in the price. They offer a price that you may think is all-inclusive but really it is not.

At Paradise Recovery, we give you an agreement that details exactly what is included in the price. Bills after discharge will not be "sprung" on you. All of the information is supplied ahead of time. With everything except the Akamai Track, the price includes the doctor visits, psychiatric evaluation and psychiatric follow-up costs.

It's just one more reason to choose Paradise Recovery.

Private Drug Rehab

Paradise Recovery offers private, oceanfront accommodations for those who seek recovery from drugs. The drug addict seeking recovery will find many benefits in the close, intimate setting at Paradise Recovery, located on the island of Oahu in Hawaii.

Hawaiians believe in the healing benefits of the ocean. They see it as a way to "cleanse" your body and spirit. Letting go of the "old" and making way for all that is new, which after all, is the essence of recovery. At Paradise Recovery, we welcome all to take part in the healing elements our islands provide so abundantly.

Not only are there benefits from the healing elements of the ocean, the fact that we are only an eight bed drug rehab, provides the drug addict seeking recovery with individualized attention and therapy. Allowing the drug addict to focus deeply into their particular core issues that have allowed the disease to continue to manifest in their lives.

These are only a couple of the benefits in choosing a private drug rehab. If you or a loved one needs help, don't get lost in the shuffle of larger rehabs...choose a private drug rehab, choose Paradise Recovery!

Drug Rehab Success Rates

I see a number of drug rehabs claiming that they have the highest success rates in the country. Some say "76% success rate", some "83%", and I think I saw one that said 90%+.

The question that I have is, how did each of those facilities define "success"? That is a really important question. The industry standard is sobriety at the 6 month mark. Is that the number they are using? Also, why aren't their studies published anywhere? If they really have done these studies that show great success rates, why not publish them? Could I take a look at your study?

I can answer most of these questions. The drug rehabs that celebrate their success rates don't want to show you their study. They don't want to publish it. Why? Because the study is not good. It won't qualify as a scientific study, either because they are using lousy definitions of "success", they used a very small number of hand-picked people to include in the study, or the results are not real. It is possible that they really don't have a study. If you have a study, why not let me see it?

Here is the truth about drug rehabs: the best drug rehabs take an integrative, holistic approach to treatment that is individualized based on your core issues and particular needs. That is being borne out in the real scientific studies that are being published in the scientific literature. Those truly are the drug rehabs with the highest success rates.

Being an integrative, holistic treatment program is easier said than done. Most drug and alcohol rehabs don't understand the real meaning of those words. It is very difficult to set up a drug rehab to operate this way, but it is simple and life-changing to receive the benefits of it!

There are some good drug rehabs out there. However, not all of them are what they say they are. Don't settle for less.

DUIs and Living on Borrowed Time: Getting Help Today for Addictions

When an alcoholic or drug addict is caught driving while intoxicated (DUI) there often is a sudden fear and exposure of a self-destructive path that prefers going unknown by others. A phone call to your spouse or parent, spending a night in jail, the legal processes, etc. are all disturbing events for professional women and men who are drinking or using drugs and deciding to operate a vehicle.

Some sources state there have been 250,000 fatalities associated with DUIs in the past ten years in the U.S. More and more states are instituting ignition interlock systems for drivers charged with a DUI. The dangers of driving while intoxicated are countless and the physical, emotional and spiritual costs are significant.

Some people see a DUI as a proverbial "wake-up call" and seek help. Before you lose your privilege to drive and loss your license, which often makes your ability to work difficult, it is wise to seek a rehab stay today and begin to embrace recovery!

If you, or someone you know is manipulating the legal system secondary to a DUI, please have them call our 24-hour HelpLine at (866) 478-9898 and speak with one of our recovery counselors.

Private Rehab: What should you expect and not expect

Choosing a private rehab for your alcohol and drug addiction recovery needs is a smart choice. However, there are considerations you should be aware of prior to and upon admission to the program.

1) Be aware of spa programs: Being in early recovery, there is so much to learn and so much to purge in order to move forward with a recovery that is sustaining. To integrate massage, acupuncture, movement therapy, aroma therapy, etc. into your treatment is recommended for a holistic program attending to a mind, body, spirit approach. The program should offer several individual psychotherapy per week, family/loved ones sessions, traditional and complimentary medical staff, and relapse prevention training. These critical services are a MUST, in conjunction with spa services.

2) Be aware of a penitential model: Some programs have a heavy emphasis on being punitive and punishing their clients. Often these programs have "gurus" who have answers for all your recovery needs. You have punished yourself way too much, you don't need someone allegedly in recovery, playing power games with you and pretending to know you and what your needs are in a matter of days. The staff at the private rehab should respect you and attempt to approach your issues with a solution-focus, resiliency approach.

3) Be aware of "The Cure" model: The current scientific literature on addiction is clear that there is no cure for addictions of any kind. However, we have many strategies on managing our illness. We have medications, self-help groups, personal transformation, spiritual support, physical fitness and improved self-esteem is all aids in sustaining a recovery and managing your lifelong illness. Some programs will tell you they have a "cure" with unscientific research findings. Some would say, its unethical.

Overall, you need to interview key staff prior to admitting to a private rehab. If key staff (clinical director, program manager, etc.) are not available to you, then you may want to move on to another program. There are many choices...choose the right one for you!

If you, or a loved one needs rehab services, please contact one of our recovery counselors on our 24 Hour HelpLine at (866) 478-9898.

Always direct your thoughts to those truths that will give you confidence, hope, joy, love, thanksgiving, and turn away your mind from those that inspire you with fear, sadness, depression.

The H.O.W to in Alcohol Rehab

Many alcoholics may wonder "how" they can succeed in alcohol rehab. Many alcoholics may wonder "how" they can even consider alcohol rehab. The disease of alcoholism is always lurking on the shoulder of the alcoholic. Wanting the alcoholic to give in to doubts, to give in to fear, so that the disease may once again manifest itself through the alcoholic.

There is a H.O.W to succeed in alcohol or drug rehab. Honesty...Open-Mindedness...and Willingness. With these adopted attitudes, the alcoholic increases their chance of success in rehab, not to mention, success in sustained recovery.

If you or a loved one is suffering from the disease of alcoholism, please call our 24hour HelpLine @ 866-478-9898.

Why Private Drug Rehab?

Because it works. Let's say you wanted to take a painting class. Do you think you would learn more effectively in a class with 80 people or in a class with 8 people? How much individual attention would you get from the professor in the class with 80 people vs. 8? How much would your individual needs and talents be recognized in the class of 80?

Now consider a life-threatening condition like drug or alcohol addiction. Intuitively, a smaller, private drug rehab or alcohol rehab with highly trained therapists is going to allow for more individualized attention and care. Your needs are going to be met. If your "brush strokes" are incorrect, someone is going to notice right away and be able to gently nudge you back on track.

The answer is obvious. Most people get lost in the sea of people in a large drug rehab. They go along with the herd, receiving cookie-cutter treatment. If they are off track, it is difficult to notice because of the number of people involved.

You are only in drug or alcohol rehab for a very short time. Make the most of it and give yourself the best shot at addiction recovery in one of the best drug rehabs. A private one.

Crystal Meth addiction treatment

The treatment for crystal meth (crystal methamphetamine, "ice", "batu", or "Tina") addiction is not a lot different than other forms of addiction. There are, however, some promising medications that look like they may have some benefit in terms of reducing craving and risk of relapse. Crystal meth addiction is highly treatable.

Hawaii, unfortunately, was the gateway to the rest of the US for crystal meth. This is true because crystal meth had been an asian drug before it came to the US. When I came to Hawaii in the early 90's, I was seeing patients who had been addicted to crystal meth for 10 years or more! Most of the patients that we saw were men who were experiencing fairly severe paranoia and psychosis. We were also involved in some of the first studies with brain PET scanning in long-standing crystal meth addicts. Crystal meth has unfortunately evolved to become a problem across the US and through all age and socio-economic classes, including young women who use crystal meth as a weight loss drug.

The crystal meth addicted brain looks like Swiss cheese on the PET scans. No joke. Crystal meth is a horrible substance. It is made from a conglomeration of horrible household and over the counter products that cause serious brain damage. It is highly addictive and it is cheap. Not a good combination! However, with abstinence and treatment, the brain has the possibility of recovering its function.

I strongly recommend a good, holistic drug rehab for those suffering from crystal meth addiction. One that has experience in the treatment of crystal meth addiction. With the right addiction treatment, you or a loved one can get much better. You can have your life back again.

Addiction Recovery from the Ocean?

Well, yes. The ocean can be part of your recovery. The ocean waves are powerful, yet can be gentle and calming. The ocean represents a force outside of yourself. A force that you can't control, but you can accept. Your environment is part of your recovery. The location of the drug rehab or alcohol rehab. Is it located in a spiritual place, a place of healing? Is it a peaceful environment that is conducive to internal change? Can you hear the ocean waves as you drift off to sleep at night?

At Paradise Recovery, you can hear the waves gently lapping against the white sand beach, just steps away from your bedroom, as you drift off to sleep. The program is located in a very spiritual place regarded by the ancient Hawaiians as a powerful place of healing. You feel the healing power as you walk in the front doors. You also feel the sense of calm and peace.

Environment. It is part of the healing process going from the outside in. It is the easiest part of treatment because you don't have to do anything except experience it.

Drug Rehab from the Inside Out?

The best drug rehab and alcohol rehab centers are those that take a holistic approach to drug and alcohol treatment. Most say that healing takes place from "the inside out". Basically, this means that you are making internal changes in your thinking and behavior that leads down a path of sobriety.

I want to point out that a truly holistic drug or alcohol treatment program also promotes healing from the outside in. Like we have talked about before, addiction recovery involves a multi-faceted but integrated treatment approach. The treatment approach does not focus solely on what's inside. Sometimes, things need to change on the outside before the inside can begin to change. For example, there are certain nutritional needs that you are going to have in early recovery. The provision of food and the food being seen as medicine is an outside change that will begin to affect the inside of your body and allow it to heal. Acupuncture is an external process that literally goes from outside in, and works to promote internal healing as well. Physical exercise and your physical environment certainly play a role in the healing process.

So, when drug rehabs promote healing from the inside out, they are missing a big part of the best treatment that can be used for addiction recovery.

Steve Tyler goes to Rehab: Recovery from addiction

Aerosmith's Steve Tyler has gone back into drug rehab. He apparently had a long period of sobriety dating back to the 1980's before presumably relapsing.

This is a good opportunity to talk about why we don't say you have "recovered" from addiction. That's because no one is ever really "recovered". However, there are many people in "recovery". Recovery is a constant process. You spend the rest of your life working on your recovery. It is a day to day process. Addiction is a disease that can be managed. If you begin to believe you have "recovered" from addiction, that is the time that you are likely to stop working on recovery. Your life no longer focuses on recovery. It is the time that you are most likely to relapse.

I am not saying that this is what happened with Steve Tyler. I don't know why he relapsed. Only he can tell us that information. But it goes to show that no matter how long you are in recovery, you have never really recovered from the disease of addiction.

Don't be too depressed over this fact of life. Many diseases are quite manageable but require daily attention. If you don't manage it, the disease recurs. If you do manage it, the disease is much less likely to recur. I frequently compare addiction to the disease of diabetes because it helps people better understand addiction in a more concrete way. If a person is diagnosed with type II diabetes, they will hopefully begin to manage it. Ideally, they will make lifestyle changes. They change what they eat, maybe where they eat, how often they eat, what time they eat, and how much they eat. They see a dietician for consultation, begin to exercise on a regular basis, start a weight loss plan, become educated about the disease, enlist the support of friends and family, start on medication, etc. As the weight comes off and the diet improves, many type II diabetics are able to "recover" from the disease. As such, there blood sugar comes back down into the normal range and they no longer require medication.

But think about it for a second.... this person had to make tremendous lifestyle changes in order to get themselves into recovery from the diabetes. They had to give daily attention to the management of the disease. Let me ask you this: What if the diabetic who now has a normal blood sugar stops managing the disease? They stop with the special diet and frequent small meals. They are no longer careful with what they eat, don't check their blood sugars, skip the appointments with the dietician, etc. Well, it does not take a rocket scientist to figure this one out.... the diabetes relapses! Addiction is absolutely no different. It is a disease that continually needs to be managed. It takes work, focus, and priority.

We salute Steve Tyler for the life changes that he made in the face of tremendous temptation in order to get into recovery and stay in recovery for many years. He should rightly be proud of his years of sobriety, as well as his decision to recognize the need for treatment for himself again. We all wish him many, many more years of sobriety and recovery in the future.

The Best Drug Rehab Experience

The drug addict who has chosen to go through drug rehab has a choice. They can choose to be resistant, closing themselves off to a valuable life experience and most likely relapse OR the drug addict can choose to surrender and take part in one of the most enriching life experiences. To the drug addict, the word "surrender" may be translated as being "weak" or "cowardly", when in actuality, the word "surrender" simply can be translated as moving to the "winning" side.

To truly have the best drug rehab experience the drug addict has to be ready and willing to change.

Owning up to Drug Addiction

Although drug addiction is a disease, it is very important for the drug addict to "own up" to their part of the disease. Oftentimes when the drug addict is in drug rehab, they are taught that although they have a disease, they are responsible for allowing the disease to continue. How so, you may ask? Let's look at the drug addict that continues to blame others for their misfortune, if they continue to place blame on others, they are not taking responsibility of the part of the disease that wants the addict to place blame. If the drug addict were to assume responsibility, they are then allowed to look within themselves, understand the disease of drug addiction and move forward in a healthier way. And as a result are more likely not to relapse. Taking responsibility for the disease of drug addiction is an integral part of sustained recovery!

Dual Diagnosis. The importance of Treatment

Dual Diagnosis, also known as co-occurring disorders, is usually referred to mean a combination of an addiction and some other psychological difficulty. Most commonly, the things that occur along with addiction are anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, ADHD, bipolar disorder and various personality disorders.

In order to have the best chance of success against addiction, the co-occurring illness needs to be treated as well. This means that you need individualized treatment in order to correctly diagnose and treat the co-occurring illness. Group treatment alone is not going to cut it. You will need a comprehensive psychiatric assessment along with intensive individual therapy by a skilled therapist in order to have success in recovery.

Be thankful that there are a few places that are skilled at recognizing and treating dual diagnosis. You will be happy that you chose one for your drug rehab or alcohol rehab needs.

Do you have to Hit Rock Bottom for Rehab?

It is a good question. Most people say that an addict has to hit "rock bottom" before they can really be helped. This may not always be true. Also, keep in mind that rock bottom means something different for each of us. For some, the loss of a job or a relationship is rock bottom. For others, it might be the loss of family, house, car, job, and living homeless. Most people don't need to experience that kind of rock bottom in order to seek help! To lose everything, you have to be either incredibly stubborn or incredibly stupid. Or both!

The purpose of hitting rock bottom, if there is one, is that at that point you are able to admit that you are powerless over your addiction and you will do anything you can to try to treat it. (Which, not coincidentally, is the First Step of AA). If it takes the loss of everything and everyone around you, then that's what it takes. For some, the simple threat of a loss of important things in their life is enough for them to realise that it is time to get help. For others, the loss of a job or loss of a relationship with a loved one is rock bottome enough to realize that "this is serious and I need to get help".

If you are thinking about getting help, or a loved one is in need of help for their addiction, haven't they hit rock bottom enough? Maybe they are not at the point of admitting they have a serious problem and they need a little "push" in the right direction. Getting an intervention could be the little push (or big push) that they need to realize that they have hit rock bottom enough to get help. Give our HelpLine a call at 866-478-9898. We can help with an intervention referral and also work with you to get your loved one into treatment.

Resistance to Drug Rehab

For many practicing drug addicts, the last thing on their mind is going to drug rehab. The disease tells the drug addict, "You don't need help! You're not the problem, they are!" CNN reporter Richard Quest in Rehab

You might ask yourself why a high-profile person such as Richard Quest of CNN would have been caught in Central Park engaged in questionable activities and in possession of crystal methamphetamine.

I have the answer for you. It is called the disease of addiction. Addiction is something that you don't have control over. You need help to overcome addiction. If you don't get help, addiction will overcome you. It is that simple.

Somewhere Richard Quest may have realized that he was nearing the end of his rope but could not bring himself to get help (addiction is a cruel disease that is unbelievably cunning when it comes to putting barriers up against the addict getting help. Addiction always wants to preserve itself). Maybe this was his cry for help. After all, he was "caught" in Central Park in the middle of New York City. I don't know about you, but if you are a high-profile person trying to not get caught doing something illegal and embarrassing, Central Park is not the place to do it. Yet, that is exactly the place that Richard Quest was arrested.

The judge in the case ordered him into treatment. Mr. Quest's cry for help was heard. Addiction can not use its cunning ways to stop him from getting treatment anymore. Now, he has no choice. When you think about it, it was his choice to have no choice. It may have been the only way that he felt he could be in a position to get the help he needs.
