The Art of persuasion is a powerful tool used for centuries. This art that when used correctly will effect change in people, you can do anything. How often do we tell ourselves how dumb we are. Always convincing our selves on what we can't do. Often times recovery is a goal so alien to us just the thought may lead to thinking how unattainable it could be. Drug addictions creep up on us and before we know it we are in so deep it seems there is no way out. In reality most cases of addiction does not happen over night. When intoxicated we feel good but only for the first few times. And then we have to chase that high. All the time convincing our selves I cant wait to get high. We talk ourselves into a good time we know deep down we may not get and usually don't. When would now be a good time to convince yourself of a new reality. Create for your self a life that others have. You have the power to be, do or have what ever it is you want. Picture in your mind the person you know you are and let us help you find that person. Create a future memories of your self. Stop letting the past define you and learn from it. Let us use the power of persuasion to go beyond your current reality. Take your power back and transform your self. Take the time you deserve 90, 60, or 30 day stay to re discover you. Be Amazing Anthony J Mendez csac Labels: addiction recovery, drug addiction

When a person struggles with chemical, alcohol or behavioral addictions, self worth often suffers and in a strange manner, it perpetuates the addictive process. Self esteem means the appraised and felt "self worth" of an individual at any given time. We all suffer with periodic poor self-esteem. For example, when we lose a competition, or making mistakes that hurt others, etc. However, many people have fixed, chronic low self-worth. In the early days, weeks and months of substance abuse the effect is euphoria, "top of the world". However, this is a false, delusional reality. You've done nothing to earn such a euphoria. That is the drug's allure! Later, when you cannot stop the addiction, you begin to realize how the drug, alcohol, sex, etc. has caused you tremendous personal, interpersonal, vocational and economic crises. How to sustain a healthy self-worth? First, to understand you are vulnerable and permit others in to assist you. Later, you may be one of those people and help others. Once you gain your self-worth back you will feel no greater, no lesser than anyone. You are able to thrive...being FULLY ALIVE! NO DRUG ADDICT OR ALCOHOLIC CAN TRULY ATTEST TO BEING FULLY ALIVE! When seeking help for an addiction affecting your personal, love, work and social lives you are making an important step towards recovery and health. One of the fears is that you will not be able to function without the addiction. This is not true. A major component of this disease is "thinking errors". Often our thinking problems can become barriers to recovery. In actuality, we cannot live with the addiction. Trust is difficult for most people, especially addicts. However, trust is necessary to build a therapeutic relationship with your providers at the rehab. Also, you need to trust the program you are engaged in -- that it helps millions of people to stay sober and sane! Most of all, you need to trust yourself. This may be the most difficult, since we don't trust ourselves. This becomes part of surrender...surrender to a process of transformation and change, which will bring you back to loved ones, co-workers and most of all...bring you back to yourself! The more you trust, the process of recovery becomes clear and inviting. Eventually, you will think "How can I live without recovery!" We know from recent nuclear medical technology, that addiction clearly changes the brain and is often resistent to reverse. PET Scans, FMRIs, Neuro- and Biofeedback have shown how the brain responds to toxic substances, or even "toxic", addictive behavioral patterns in our personalities. When you choose a high quality rehab today, you need to ask them if they pay attention to any diagnositc interventions that offer detailed evidence as to how your particular brain may have been responding to your addiction(s). After a thorough assessment, the clinician usually begins a series of sessions that attempt to train the brain away from cravings and towards more coherence and increased functionality in the key centers of your brain. Clients at Paradise Recovery have testified to the efficacy of the treatments. It not only identifies areas that may be under-functioning, but also assists with higher levels of performance, which many of our clients desire in their high performing jobs and career choices. The brain’s reward system (Harvard Medical School Newsletter) Addictive drugs provide a shortcut to the brain’s reward system by flooding the nucleus accumbens with dopamine (the neurotransmitter focusing on pleasure). The hippocampus lays down memories of this rapid sense of satisfaction, and the amygdala creates a conditioned response to certain stimuli. Stressors or something associated with substance use can trip the mental machinery of relapse. Without the substance, you can see how detox and treatment needs to begin to reward the brain with non-toxic substances, and practice healthy ways to affect pleasure and manage pain without drugs, alcohol or other self-destructive, mood altering substances and behaviors. For many drug addicts, they find lasting recovery with the program of Narcotics Anonymous. Many drug addicts will in some way or another, identify with the excerpt below, taken from the Basic Text of Narcotics Anonymous. Chapter Three Why Are We Here?" Before coming to the Fellowship of N.A., we could not manage our own lives. We could not live and enjoy life as other people do. We had to have something different and we thought we had found it in drugs. We placed their use ahead of the welfare of our families, our wives, husbands, and our children. We had to have drugs at all costs. We did many people great harm, but most of all we harmed ourselves. Through our inability to accept personal responsibilities we were actually creating our own problems. We seemed to be incapable of facing life on its own terms. Most of us realized that in our addiction we were slowly committing suicide, but addiction is such a cunning enemy of life that we had lost the power to do anything about it. Many of us ended up in jail, or sought help through medicine, religion and psychiatry. None of these methods was sufficient for us. Our disease always resurfaced or continued to progress until in desperation, we sought help from each other in Narcotics Anonymous. After coming to N.A. we realized we were sick people. We suffered from a disease from which there is no known cure. It can, however, be arrested at some point, and recovery is then possible."If you or a loved one suffers from drug addiction, there is hope. Although drug addiction is a disease, it is very important for the drug addict to "own up" to their part of the disease. Oftentimes when the drug addict is in drug rehab, they are taught that although they have a disease, they are responsible for allowing the disease to continue. How so, you may ask? Let's look at the drug addict that continues to blame others for their misfortune, if they continue to place blame on others, they are not taking responsibility of the part of the disease that wants the addict to place blame. If the drug addict were to assume responsibility, they are then allowed to look within themselves, understand the disease of drug addiction and move forward in a healthier way. And as a result are more likely not to relapse. Taking responsibility for the disease of drug addiction is an integral part of sustained recovery! For those suffering from drug addiction, the last thing they want to admit is that their drugging has caused them to be "insane" The definition of insanity, to many, is repeating the same behavior over and over again, expecting different results. For example, the addict who needs a fix, a smoke, the pipe first thing in the morning, may find that by taking that first drug only results in progressive using throughout the day, into the night until they run out of money or the like. As insane as addicts can be when in the grips of the disease of addiction, the addict may really believe they can still have that first fix the next morning, hoping to yield a different result, maybe they believe they can stop after the first fix or two, maybe they believe they can continue using "normally" and not to excess that eventually leads to dire consequences. Most times, the addict will not be successful in their attempts to control their using. That is what we call "insanity". Many addicts have found the answer through the 12 steps of Narcotics Anonymous. Restoring the addict to sanity is practiced through Step Two of Narcotics Anonymous. "We came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity." As the addict approaches this step, they begin to consider that maybe, just maybe, there is a Power Greater than themselves - a Power capable of healing their hurt, calming their confusion, and restoring their sanity. The addict learns and understands that finding this "Higher Power" doesn't mean they have to be religious. That's far from the truth, the addict learns that the 12 Steps of Narcotics Anonymous is a spiritual, not religious program. As the addict remains clean and continues to work Step Two, they discover that no matter how long their addiction has gone on and how far their insanity has progressed, there is no limit to the ability of a "Higher Power" restoring them to sanity. There is help for the drug addict. Labels: drug addiction, narcotics anonymous, Step Two

Salvia Divinorum, or commonly known as "Salvia", "Lady Salvia," "Sally-D," or "Magic Mint" is a powerful hallucinogenic and psychoactive herb with a long religious use with Mazatec shamans to induce a "religious experience". It is sold in the U.S. in small bags with varying strengths, and it is TOTALLY LEGAL. Yes, even your 10 year-old can buy Salvia at a local store. It can be chewed, smoked, or taken as a tincture. A search on YouTube can offer you video proof of the bizarre and scary looking effects of the herb. Some of its bizarre effects are: uncontrollable laughter, altered mental states, dysphoria, confusion, or visual illusions. The duration of the high is about 3-4 minutes depending on the strength. Ironically, Salvia reportedly has been used to curb addiction cravings and can put a depressed person in an elevated, less depressed mood. The herb may be non-addictive, but the use of Salvia with other drugs and alcohol may be deadly. Of course, who is the first in line to try Salvia? You've guessed it...adolecsents and addicts! Both groups have a great deal of difficulty handling affect and mood. Adolescents have enough to worry about regarding mood stabilization and control. Salvia is not going to assist in the emotional control department. Addicts have already put Salvia on their radar, since it another way to "run away," even for a few minutes, from life's happenings and responsibilities. So, if you or someone you know if regularly using Salvia along with other drugs, please call our 24-Hour HelpLine at (866) 478-9898 and speak with one of our counselors in recovery. Lets keep its use to Mexican shammans and restrict its use to growing adolescents and addicts, who may be convinced that Salvia is another "weed type high" and it can't be further from the truth! What makes the addict is the disease of addiction - not the drugs, not the alcohol, not the behavior, but the disease. There is "something" within the alcoholic/drug addict that makes it impossible to control the use of drugs or alcohol. This same "something" also makes them prone to obsession and compulsion in other areas of their lives. How can one tell when the disease is active? When the alcoholic/drug addict becomes trapped in obsessive, compulsive, self-centered routines, endless loops that lead nowhere but to physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional decay. The disease of addiction can manifest itself in many ways. When the alcoholic/drug addict first realizes their problem, they think it's just the drugs or alcohol that is the culprit of their problems. Later to find out that their addiction is wreaking havoc in their lives in any number of ways. It is suggested that working through the twelve steps of Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous can help the addict/alcoholic identify and understand their disease. Help the addict/alcoholic find freedom from active addiction. Labels: addiction, alcoholic, alcoholics anonymous, drug addiction, narcotics anonymous

We know from decades of successful recovery work that one key character trait that aids in recovery work, and without it hinders recovery success, is humility. Humility comes from the Latin root "humus" meaning earthy, or without airs. So, to be humble is to be "real". Being humble requires shifting from a self-centered, addictive existence,to a more other-focused existence. For example, we limit phone calls in rehab precisely because our new clients will call family members and loved ones and harangue about themselves and why they should or should not (more often) be in rehab. They actually may attack and blame others. A humble response would be to consider what my behaviors may have done to affect my loved ones and commit to treatment, and follow the instructions of the rehab staff, since I know I am not an expert in recovery. Humility is not easy. It is not an innate American trait. You just need to travel a bit and realize the reputation we Americans have throughout large portions of the planet. Often in our country, humble people are seen as weak, vulnerable and inactive. Regarding recovery, humility is the mortar that keeps the foundation alive and strong. It is by far, not an inactive, vulnerable position. Arrogance, pride, self-absorption is what we need to avoid as persons in recovery. We need to fight the prideful, arrogance that often is associated with addiction and realize that this attitude is going to kill me! Denial...the part of the alcoholism disease or drug addiction disease that tells them they don't have a disease. How many times have you heard about the alcoholic or drug addict minimizing the effects of their disease, not wanting to see the reality of their addiction to drugs or alcohol. Here's an easy way to tell if you or a loved one may be in denial of alcoholism or drug addiction, as taken from excerpts in the Narcotics Anonymous step working guide: 1. Have you or the alcoholic or drug addict given plausible but untrue reasons for you or their behavior? 2. Have you or the alcoholic or drug addict compulsively acted on an obsession, and then acted as if you or they had actually planned to act that way? 3. How have you or the alcoholic or drug addict blamed other people for you or their behavior? 4. How have you or the alcoholic or drug addict compared you or their addiction or alcoholism with others' addiction or alcoholism? 5. Are you or the alcoholic or drug addict avoiding action because you or they are afraid to be ashamed when facing the results of alcoholism or drug addiction? Are you or the alcoholic or drug addict avoiding taking action because of what others may think? The list can go on, however these are the key elements of denial that those with alcoholism and drug addiction contend with. This is both a test for alcoholism and a test for drug addiction, they may be a different substance, however the disease manifests itself the same. If you or a loved one answers "yes" to more than one question, you may want to look into alcohol treatment or drug treatment, also referred to as alcohol rehab or drug rehab. There, professionals will be helpful in unraveling the disease of alcoholism and drug addiction, starting you on your path of sustained recovery. Blessings to you..... The process of healing begins with self, begins from within. Typically for alcoholism or drug addiction, the alcoholic or drug addict tends to find blame in people, places or things outside of themselves, essentially robbing themselves of true healing from within. Drug addiction and alcoholism are both a cunning and baffling disease, that oftentimes, the drug addict or alcoholic cannot see a way to recover. Well, there is, through healing the self, the drug addict and alcoholic can experience sustained recovery. Drug rehabs and alcohol rehabs offer the drug addict and alcoholic the opportunity to essentially begin treatment with self, to identify core issues that led to their alcoholism or drug addiction. There is hope for recovery when you start from within! Labels: alcohol rehab, alcoholic, alcoholism, denial in addiction, drug addiction, drug rehab

There are many ways people seek treatment for drug addiction and alcohol addiction. Many seek treatment through drug rehabs and alcohol rehabs, while others may find it helps working with their Psychologist, Psychiatrist or Doctor. Still others may find relief through spirituality or religion to relieve them of their drug abuse and alcohol abuse. All are great ways to get started on your road to recovery. When combined with the knowledge of being powerless over drug addiction and alcohol addiction, as taken from Step One in Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, you then have an even greater chance of sustained recovery. Step One - We admitted that we were powerless over our alcohol addiction and/or drug addiction, that our lives had become unmanageable. The First Step is the start of the recovery process...the freedom from drug addiction and alcohol addiction starts with Step One. The decision to confront an addiction, whether alcohol, drugs, sex, or gambling requires a great deal of personal inventory, discovery, and/or re-discovery. In most addicts lives, running from core issues in our lives (e.g. feelings of worthlessness, childhood trauma, grief/loss, mood swings, etc.)helps to maintain the addiction and the numbing effects of the drug or process addiction. Recovery requires nothing less than transformation! I often say this as a "mantra" when greeting new clients to Paradise Recovery. For certain, the addiction required your full and undivided attention, so recovery will ask for nothing less. Spirituality is a key component to recovery. Notice, I'm not saying, "religion". Spirituality means having to do with your inner world and how your inner world connects with the inner world of another or some other thing. Often the aim of spirituality is peace and inner serenity. However, spirituality has aided many women and men through rough times and when life appears hopeless. Spirituality is both the container and the items in the container. You partner with spirituality to become the most authentic and happy person you can become...you thrive! The self-help movement of alcoholics anonymous (AA)and more recently narcotics anonymous (NA) has been described as the most powerful spiritual movement of our time. The authentic connections, sharings, tears, laughter, coffee, etc. are all ingredients to a spirituality that works for many people who buy-in to the transformation concept. Each person needs to find out for themselves what and how spirituality will bring them to the inner peace and serenity, while not running anymore from the "black pains" in our lives. Obviously, spirituality is very important. It is the ongoing relationship with yourself. You becoming YOU! If you or a loved one is struggling with an addiction, please do not hesitate to seek help. One of the most curious phenomena of people in need of alcohol or drug rehabilitation is the defense of denial. Denial serves to prevent the sufferer from fully comprehending the extent to which their alcoholism or drug dependence is affecting their physical health, their relationships, their employment, their entire lives. Despite lives that are falling apart or in disrepair, alcoholics and drug abusers are notorious at their ability to turn a blind eye to reality, to what is actually happening. They suffer from a disease that can actually say to them, "You're not really sick. This is all to be expected. You don't need addiction treatment." Alcoholics and drug addicts are uniquely able to trick themselves into thinking they don't need addiction treatment or drug rehabilitation. Despite the deadly consequences of this thinking. When people are diagnosed with cancer, they often will actively seek to find an appropriate treatment. The light goes on quickly and they jump into pursuit of saving their own lives. Not so with alcohol rehab and drug rehab. Alcoholics and addicts often do the exact opposite--they go to great ends to avoid treatment, to avoid taking the medicine that will save their lives. The problem is very real. The need for treatment quite obvious. Curious that the patient is the last to recognize this. Entering an addiction rehab center is, well, a sobering experience! You will experience a number of emotions as you go through the experience. It is not easy. But it can be life-saving! Drug rehab or alcohol rehab is a highly personal experience. At least it should be. There are many elements that brought you down the road that you are on. Those elements, some healthy, some not, are uniquely your own. That's why the treatment you should receive is going to be individualized according to your individual needs. Keep in mind, you are unique. The disease of addiction, however, is not unique. The treatment, therefore, is a delicate balance between treating the non-unique disease with the unique issues that you brought with you. You will not be asked to just "go through the motions" of treatment. You will not be a passive participant in your own treatment. You are going to be an active participant in making the addiction treatment experience your own. This will require a lot of hard work on your part, but with the proper guidance, it will all be very much worth it. In our experience, the most successful drug rehab experiences have one thing in common: Recuperatio Primoris. What the heck does that mean? Dr. Bill is always using that phrase.... and for good reason! Recuperatio Primoris means to put recovery first. Recovery above all else! Your life now needs to be centered around your recovery. As soon as other things in life begin to take priority over recovery, relapses are going to happen. It is simply a matter of time at that point. So, there you have it. The number one key to a successful drug rehab experience is making recovery the number one priority. And keeping it that way!! Don't let anything or anyone else stand in your way of recovery. The Wall Street Journal reported this morning on a trendy but disturbing phenomenon called " Pharm Parties" at college campuses across the U.S. Instead of the traditional "kegger" (or in addition to the keg of beer), the students b.y.o.p. (bring your own pharmaceuticals) to the party and mix them in a big bowl and eat them like candy. Tragically, it is not surprising that there has been an increase in fatal unintentional overdoses recently that is 4 to 5 times that of what was seen in the black tar heroin epidemic of the 1970's! There has been an alarming increase in narcotic drug use among college students of late. The annual prevelance of narcotic drug use among college students now stands at 8.8% according to the University of Michigan study funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Specifically, the annual prevelance of OxyContin use doubled to 3%; the use of Vicodin rose to 7.6%. What makes these drugs so available? Teens and young adults may be prescribed pain killers at one time or another and have saved them up. Mom and Dad's medicine cabinet or from a friend are other sources. Narcotics are much more widely available, in part, due to the soaring rates at which narcotics have been prescribed. Online pharmacies have sprung up by the thousands and offer additional impersonal access to narcotics. Not only do you not know what you are taking when you reach into a bowl of narcotics, but people generally don't realize how addictive these pharmaceuticals can be. Repeated use by students, in particular those who may already have a genetic predisposition to addiction, can quickly lead to addiction. What to watch for if you suspect something with a friend or with your child? Obviously, disappearing medications from the home medicine cabinet. A quickly disappearing bank account or going through money unusually quickly. A drop in grades, loss of interest in activities that used to interest them, a change in friends, unusual mood swings, lying behaviors, stealing, and personality changes. If your friend or family member is suffering from any of these behavior changes, it is important to get help for them. Addiction and other mood disorders are very common and can have lethal consequences if they are not treated. Best to go with your gut instinct and err on the side of getting an evaluation with a mental health professional than doing nothing and risk losing a loved one. The decision to enter into a drug rehab and begin the all important work of recovery is fearful for most people! Aloha and thank you for taking the time to read our daily blog at Paradise Recovery. We often here from our HelpLine operator that people will desperately need help and describing an all too familiar story about personal and interpersonal tragedy and how addiction has destroyed all that is important in their lives. However, a percentage of the callers will then want to "schedule" their rehab until a later day...one, two or even three months in the future. Why do you think this is not helpful? Well, just so you know, all, yes I said ALL, of these callers do not end up in rehab at the time they desired. The misunderstanding that attacking this disease of addiction is like scheduling a spa appointment is a gross underestimation of the control that the disease has over you. The First of the Twelve Steps say, "We admit we are powerless over our addiction and our lives have become unmanageable." To deny this, is to hand over the power to the disease and in many cases, ending in death! If you, or someone you know needs help, then please respond to your intuition and make the call immediately, or arrange for help and act quickly. Our experience is when you act quickly, you have a greater chance for transformation, hence a sustaining recovery from drugs and alcohol or any other type of addiction! In "taking control" over getting help, you are "surrendering" to the recovery process away from a life of addiction.
