Alcohol and Drug Addiction: Issues of Self-Esteem

When a person struggles with chemical, alcohol or behavioral addictions, self worth often suffers and in a strange manner, it perpetuates the addictive process.

Self esteem means the appraised and felt "self worth" of an individual at any given time. We all suffer with periodic poor self-esteem. For example, when we lose a competition, or making mistakes that hurt others, etc. However, many people have fixed, chronic low self-worth.

In the early days, weeks and months of substance abuse the effect is euphoria, "top of the world". However, this is a false, delusional reality. You've done nothing to earn such a euphoria. That is the drug's allure! Later, when you cannot stop the addiction, you begin to realize how the drug, alcohol, sex, etc. has caused you tremendous personal, interpersonal, vocational and economic crises.

How to sustain a healthy self-worth? First, to understand you are vulnerable and permit others in to assist you. Later, you may be one of those people and help others. Once you gain your self-worth back you will feel no greater, no lesser than anyone. You are able to thrive...being FULLY ALIVE!

NO DRUG ADDICT OR ALCOHOLIC CAN TRULY ATTEST TO BEING FULLY ALIVE! If you, or someone is suffering with drug/alcohol addiction please call us at our 24/7 Call Center at (866) 478-9898 and speak with one of our recovery counselors.

Great Alcohol Detox

Many people are afraid of alcohol detox because they are afraid of feeling sick and having all of the withdrawal symptoms that go along with it. Paradise Recovery, though, has a great alcohol detox program that is very easy on the body. They combine medications, really good food, and a new process called auricular acupuncture (which is optional if you want it) that makes your alcohol detox very comfortable. You are able to start participating in your treatment usually within a day. In other words, you start to feel "human" again very quickly. The transformation that people experience early on is truly amazing.

You can call them and get more information about alcohol detoxification. They have a toll-free number and they are located on a beautiful beach in Honolulu, Hawaii. What better place to get recovery both on the inside and the outside? Here is their number: 866-478-9898. If you make the call, you'll be happy that you did!

Gratitude as a tool for recovery: Wisdom from the Rehab

Today, we often hear in recovery circles how we should develop an "attitude of gratitude". I wonder if many people know what that is, let alone putting it into practice on a daily basis to fight the spiritual ravages of addiction. Gratitude comes from the Latin grates, or habere, meaning to feel gratitude. When people think of gratitude, they think of thankfulness, or the response when you receive something of value from someone. However, it is much, much more.

Practicing gratitude is acknowledging that you are vulnerable and able to receive and be aware, intimately, of the person giving or exchanging with you. You may just have a thought of gratitude, while not receiving anything other than the overwhelming sense of gratitude for living, breathing, loving, etc. A person in this state most likely seeks what is good and right for themselves and others.

If you, or someone you love is struggling with an addiction. Please call our Call Center and speak with one of our recovery counselors at (866) 478-9898.

Primoris,
Dr. Bill Heran

At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by the spark of another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us. Albert Schweitzer

Private Drug Rehab

Paradise Recovery offers private, oceanfront accommodations for those who seek recovery from drugs. The drug addict seeking recovery will find many benefits in the close, intimate setting at Paradise Recovery, located on the island of Oahu in Hawaii.

Hawaiians believe in the healing benefits of the ocean. They see it as a way to "cleanse" your body and spirit. At Paradise Recovery, we welcome all to take part in the healing elements our islands provide so abundantly.

Not only are there benefits from the healing elements of the ocean, the fact that we are only an eight bed drug rehab, provides the drug addict seeking recovery with individualized attention and therapy. Allowing the drug addict to focus deeply into their particular core issues that have allowed the disease to continue to manifest in their lives.

These are only a couple of the benefits in choosing a private drug rehab. If you or a loved one needs help, don't get lost in the shuffle of larger rehabs...choose a private drug rehab, choose Paradise Recovery!

Crystal Meth addiction treatment

The treatment for crystal meth (crystal methamphetamine, "ice", "batu", or "Tina") addiction is not a lot different than other forms of addiction. There are, however, some promising medications that look like they may have some benefit in terms of reducing craving and risk of relapse. Crystal meth addiction is highly treatable.

Hawaii, unfortunately, was the gateway to the rest of the US for crystal meth. This is true because crystal meth had been an asian drug before it came to the US. When I came to Hawaii in the early 90's, I was seeing patients who had been addicted to crystal meth for 10 years or more! Most of the patients that we saw were men who were experiencing fairly severe paranoia and psychosis. We were also involved in some of the first studies with brain PET scanning in long-standing crystal meth addicts. Crystal meth has unfortunately evolved to become a problem across the US and through all age and socio-economic classes, including young women who use crystal meth as a weight loss drug.

The crystal meth addicted brain looks like Swiss cheese on the PET scans. No joke. Crystal meth is a horrible substance. It is made from a conglomeration of horrible household and over the counter products that cause serious brain damage. It is highly addictive and it is cheap. Not a good combination! However, with abstinence and treatment, the brain has the possibility of recovering its function.

I strongly recommend a good, holistic drug rehab for those suffering from crystal meth addiction. One that has experience in the treatment of crystal meth addiction. With the right addiction treatment, you or a loved one can get much better. You can have your life back again.

Addiction Recovery from the Ocean?

Well, yes. The ocean can be part of your recovery. The ocean waves are powerful, yet can be gentle and calming. The ocean represents a force outside of yourself. A force that you can't control, but you can accept. Your environment is part of your recovery. The location of the drug rehab or alcohol rehab. Is it located in a spiritual place, a place of healing? Is it a peaceful environment that is conducive to internal change? Can you hear the ocean waves as you drift off to sleep at night?

At Paradise Recovery, you can hear the waves gently lapping against the white sand beach, just steps away from your bedroom, as you drift off to sleep. The program is located in a very spiritual place regarded by the ancient Hawaiians as a powerful place of healing. You feel the healing power as you walk in the front doors. You also feel the sense of calm and peace.

Environment. It is part of the healing process going from the outside in. It is the easiest part of treatment because you don't have to do anything except experience it.

Hawaiian Addiction Treatment and the Family: Ho'oponopono

Addiction hurts many people. Not just the addicted person themselves, but also their family, friends, and loved ones. When beginning treatment for addiction, one has many aspects that need healing. There is a type of Hawaiian therapy which is called Ho'oponopono. This powerful word literally means "to make things right". The Hawaiians believe that it is important to make things right, not only with those whom you have current relationships (family, friends and loved ones), but also with your ancestors. Ho'oponopono is a process by which the family is brought together and the things that are not "right" are worked through in a highly experiential session. It is a powerful and moving experience. It is also the beginning of healing for the addicted person and their family.

The only drug rehab in the world with an offering of this ancient Hawaiian therapy is Paradise Recovery, located on the island of Oahu. It's time for all of us to make things right.

Live Simply, So you May Simply Live!

When we think of simple living, images are evoked of a cool hippie commune, monks living on the generosity of others, Toyota Prius owners, or Martha Stewart...oh well, maybe not!

I know for sure that drug and alcohol abuse is NOT a simple-affirming lifestyle. The stories of addicts are woefully wrought with conflict, denial, minimization about the hurt feelings of others, and it goes on and on.

Deciding to enter treatment for addiction can be a choice to live more simply, so you may simply live! The addiction disease process is progressive and without attention will simply kill, so why not simply live!

Living Simply is choosing to focus one's life in continuous benefit to others and to self. It usually works that way. The more we give and have concern and act on the concerns for others, then it makes our self concern more tolerable. In a complex, often depressing world, to decide to live simply gives us the soul energy to both celebrate and battle whatever crosses our path. When we "aim high" and "play large", wrapped in gratitude, we can see how our life changes...it becomes more simple!

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate, our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond all measure...it is our light not our darkness that most frightens us! We ask ourselves who are we to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous, who are we not to be, we are a child of God." Nelson Mandela, his inaugural address, 1994

Getting sober in Hawaii

There is no better place to get sober. Hawaii has an intangible spiritual and healing environment that is difficult to describe. You feel it when you get here. I don't know if it is the blue Pacific waters, the lush green mountains, or the purest air and natural water in the world. Something about these Islands is very special. Maybe it's the people. Hawaii is known for its mature recovery community. There are a lot of people active in recovery here in the Islands. They take their recovery to heart and are great people to help you along the way.

No other place on earth can compare with the beauty, spirit and power of healing that Hawaii has to offer. That's why this is the best place on earth to have a drug rehab center. Addiction treatment is a difficult process that is made so much easier when the forces of nature are behind you. Not to mention a lot of beautiful people who are on your side.

Enjoy Paradise.

Making treatment your own!

Entering an addiction rehab center is, well, a sobering experience! You will experience a number of emotions as you go through the experience. It is not easy. But it can be life-saving!

Drug rehab or alcohol rehab is a highly personal experience. At least it should be. There are many elements that brought you down the road that you are on. Those elements, some healthy, some not, are uniquely your own. That's why the treatment you should receive is going to be individualized according to your individual needs.

Keep in mind, you are unique. The disease of addiction, however, is not unique. The treatment, therefore, is a delicate balance between treating the non-unique disease with the unique issues that you brought with you. You will not be asked to just "go through the motions" of treatment. You will not be a passive participant in your own treatment. You are going to be an active participant in making the addiction treatment experience your own. This will require a lot of hard work on your part, but with the proper guidance, it will all be very much worth it.

Hawaiian Addiction Treatment

A Hawaiian kupuna, a wise elder, works with clients and teaches them ancient Hawaiian values and health practices. Some of you will want to receive a Hawaiian blessing from the kupuna! Our kupuna has indicated that the location of our home, between Diamond Head and Koko Head, the "life-blood" of the island of Oahu is uniquely situated in a well-regarded place of healing, according to the ancient Hawaiians. We take full advantage of the location and unique healing properties of the "aina" or Hawaiian land. We work closely with Hawaiian organic farmers in providing the best organically grown fruits and vegetables from Hawaii.
Therapeutically, we incorporate a Hawaiian family therapy technique called, “ho’oponopono,” or “making things right" in select cases, along with traditional family therapy.
