Paradise Recovery has taken very deliberate steps in making our residence, staff and program gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered affirming in both design and execution. Dr. Bill Heran, one of Paradise Recovery’s owners is an expert in working with GLBT communities and early addiction recovery. We plan each element of treatment with gay clients; some elements include GLBT community support meetings (e.g. AA/NA/SLAA), affirming spirituality and worship services (optional), family of origin work focusing on GLBT concerns, and working through internalized homophobia and heterosexism and its effects on addiction recovery. All of the other program components apply including: cost of usage inventory, identified thinking errors, adaptive thinking strategies, 12-Step work, relapse prevention and aftercare planning.
Our residence has both gay and straight clients. However, the Paradise Recovery residence is an accepting environment, fostering positive self-esteem and removing self-hatred. Everyone’s story is respected and the goal is health and sobriety, away from self-destructive patterns of behavior including: managing your life without the bar scene, friends who abuse alcohol and drugs, sexual compulsivity, multiple re-locations, serial monogamy, etc.
At the end of your second month, you may participate in an intensive family program (IFP). You may invite your partner, friends, family members, co-workers, etc. Our gay clients have reported greatly benefiting from the IFP and the resulting changed strategies as they move forward in their recovery.
Upon completion of the program, Paradise Recovery will help ensure you have a GLBT-affirming therapist, sober living, and/or mental health providers in your home community. You may also take advantage of a monitoring program that helps to provide the support required for a sustained recovery. |
